While Pres. Trump marvels at the number of European leaders coming to the White House at any one time as a source of strength, the Wall Street Journal’s Laurence Norman is reporting that one source he spoke to is saying that today’s Washington meeting is more of a blame game than peace talks.
Trump pre-meeting has said that Ukraine’s Zelenskiy could end the war with Russia “almost immediately” if Kyiv accepted a peace deal requiring it to give up Crimea and abandon NATO membership aspirations.
Zelensky, meanwhile, has welcomed U.S. security guarantees, but dismissed elements of Putin’s proposals from their Alaska summit, which called for Ukraine to cede part of the Donetsk region. As Trump put it in a Sunday Truth Social post: “President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight.”
It does not sound positive.
If Trump, can’t get the victory from a ceasefire – and he did not – Plan B is he can blame past administrations (“it would not have happened on my watch”), he can blame Zelenskiy (he has shown that tact before), and the EU.
What about the additional Russian sanctions?
Cricket(s)….for now.
