Takaichi is dubbed as Abe’s protégé and lost out in the run-off vote against Ishiba at last year’s leadership contest. She is the frontrunner at the moment to win this year’s ballot, which will take place on 4 October. However, she is likely to face serious competition from Shinjiro Koizumi – son of popular former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi. If Takaichi wins, she will be Japan’s first female prime minister. If Koizumi wins, he will be Japan’s youngest prime minister in the modern era.
