US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said American and Chinese trade officials will meet again within the next two to three months to discuss the future of their economic ties. The remarks follow Monday’s agreement to extend a tariff truce for another 90 days, avoiding steep duties on each other’s goods.
Bessent added that Chinese President Xi Jinping has invited Donald Trump to meet, though no date has been set and the US president has not yet accepted. Trump has previously said he would meet Xi before year-end if a trade deal were reached.
On tariffs, Bessent stressed that the US would need to see sustained progress on curbing fentanyl flows from China — potentially over months or even a year — before considering tariff reductions. Washington accuses Beijing of failing to limit exports of fentanyl precursors, a charge China rejects. Tariffs of 20% imposed in February remain in place, alongside an additional 10% base levy, despite the current truce agreed in May.
